Here are some tips for homeowner's loss prevention in the Spring:

Inspect and Clean Gutters and Downspouts

  • Remove leaves, twigs, and debris to prevent water backup and damage to your roof and foundation.

  • Ensure downspouts direct water away from your home.

  • Check Your Roof

    • Look for missing, damaged, or loose shingles.

    • Repair any leaks or damage to prevent water intrusion.

  • Inspect and Service HVAC Systems

    • Schedule maintenance for your air conditioning system.

    • Clean or replace filters to improve efficiency and reduce fire risk.

  • Trim Trees and Shrubs

    • Cut back branches that are close to or touching your house to reduce risk of damage during storms.

    • Remove dead or weak limbs that could fall.

  • Inspect Windows and Doors

    • Check for cracks or gaps and reseal or caulk as needed.

    • Ensure locks work properly to improve security.

  • Check Sump Pump and Drainage Systems

    • Test your sump pump to ensure it is working properly.

    • Clear any blockages in drainage to prevent basement flooding.

  • Clean Dryer Vents and Chimneys

    • Remove lint buildup from dryer vents to reduce fire risk.

    • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned if you use a fireplace.

  • Review Your Home Inventory and Update Insurance

    • Document valuable items with photos or videos.

    • Update your homeowner’s insurance policy if you’ve made improvements or purchased new valuables.

  • Install or Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

    • Replace batteries or install new detectors if needed.

    • Position detectors on every level of your home.

    • Store or secure lawn furniture, grills, and tools to prevent damage or theft.
